Introducing Custom GPTs: Tailor-Made AI for Everyone

2 min

The latest advancement in artificial intelligence comes with the roll-out of GPTs (Generative Pre-trained Transformers) – customizable versions of ChatGPT that individuals and businesses can tailor for specific purposes. From learning board game rules to teaching math and designing stickers, GPTs enhance daily tasks without the need for coding knowledge.

With the introduction of GPTs, OpenAI enables users to easily build their own AI models. These can be private, for company-internal use, or shared with the wider community. The process is as simple as initiating a conversation with ChatGPT at, where users can provide instructions, impart extra knowledge, and select capabilities such as web searching, image creation, or data analysis.

Currently, ChatGPT Plus and Enterprise users have access to example GPTs, including integrations with platforms like Canva and Zapier AI Actions. OpenAI plans to extend access to more users shortly.

Custom Instructions launched in July offered some level of personalization, but the demand for greater control persisted. GPTs answer this call by automating the incorporation of user-created prompt and instruction sets, streamlining the customization process.

The community is expected to be the birthplace of the best GPTs, with no coding expertise required to create and share helpful tools. This democratization of AI tool creation is seen as pivotal in the drive for innovation and utility.

The upcoming GPT Store will allow creators to publicly share their GPTs, which will then become searchable and potentially featured across various categories. There’s also a financial incentive, with creators able to earn based on user engagement with their GPTs.

Privacy and safety are at the forefront of the GPT initiative. OpenAI ensures user data control, with chats not being shared with builders and the option to allow or prevent third-party API data sharing. Systems are in place to review GPTs against usage policies, aiming to curb the dissemination of harmful content.

In addition, developers can now connect GPTs to the real world with custom actions, integrating external data and interacting with various systems, thereby creating more dynamic and interactive AI tools.

For enterprises, GPTs offer an opportunity to tailor ChatGPT to specific business needs, with companies like Amgen, Bain, and Square already adopting them for internal use.

In line with OpenAI’s mission of building safe and beneficial AGI, involving the community in AI development is crucial. Broad participation is likely to result in AI that is better aligned with human values and safety.

Finally, ChatGPT Plus has been updated with the latest information and streamlined for ease of use, consolidating all features, including DALL·E, browsing, and data analysis, into a single interface. Users can now attach files for ChatGPT to search through various document types, simplifying the user experience further.
